Abacha FC – ‘The League Giants’

The ‘Able Bodied Children Hear Africa Football Club’ was formed when displaced children, orphaned by the civil war, were taken in and cared for by the families of Kenema. They have since nurtured the development of these young children into fine young boys who will no doubt be at the heart of the community for years to come.

AC Milan – ‘il Rossoneri’

Playing in last year’s tournament, AC Milan took their name from the red and black striped t-shirts that were donated to them by a local councillor. They play like the Rossoneri, defending with passion and dedication, and attacking with fluency and skill.

Black Stars – ‘born in Ghana, played in Sierra Leone’

Following Ghana’s talismanic performance at the World Cup in South Africa, the Black Stars were set up in tribute to the team that most of Africa was proud to follow in the 2010 tournament. They play with heart and passion, the trademarks of any Black Star!

DJ MED FC – ‘put some music in your football’

Formed by a group of friends who worked at a local radio station, this team has been a mainstay of the league since its inauguration. Many of the former players have stayed on with the club to volunteer their time and experience to coach the next generation of players, something which undoubtedly contributed to the teams’ success last season when the u12 team were crowned national champions!

Real Friends – ‘true friends; true footballers’

Real Friends was started by a group of young lads who’ve been playing together since they were five years old. New to the CBF league this season, they have already started strongly under the guidance of their new manager, the enigmatic John Kpundeh, a former staff member at the CBF academy.

Samba Boys – ‘the local boys from Brazil’

This team was set up by an elderly man in Kenema who became frustrated with the lack of engagement with young people by the community after the civil war ended. He saw boys on the street with nothing to do and no-one to guide them and as such, Samba Boys FC was born.

Samba FC – ‘the true spirit of samba football’

Samba FC are the heart and spirit of their local community. Families, friends and other members of the community follow the team in everything they do and they always boast a strong support at matches.

Supersport United – ‘taking football to the next level’

Set up to help rehabilitate child soldiers returning from the war that ravaged Sierra Leone, Supersport United are now one of the league’s giants. Constantly setting a high standard in their community development projects, they also perform consistently well on the pitch.

Young Cambridge – ‘the academics’

This team was re-named by local officials because of their commitment to education and academic performance. They have extremely high standards and will only accept those players who give their all both on the pitch and in the classroom.

Arrow FC – ‘straight and true’

Arrow FC joined the league in 2008 after they heard of the education focused structure that CBF had introduced. Arrow had previously come up against parents who were unhappy with their children playing football, feeling it detracted focus from school. Once they were informed that CBF monitors the school attendance of all their players, the parents of Arrow FC were impressed and have supported the team ever since.

Blazing Stars – ‘trailblazers in football’

One of last years regional finalists, Blazing Stars are a team that have stayed together through thick and thin, each player giving their all for the cause. Having been together since they were small, this group of boys consider themselves to be closer than family, important for the many who lost their real families during the war.

Brave Stars – ‘courage and heart’

Formed on a rainy evening during the monsoon in 2008, the coach saw a group of boys bravely playing through one of the biggest thunder storms to have hit Bo in years. He formed Brave Stars to give the boys some structure to their lives and they have flourished both on the pitch and in school ever since.

Central Professionals – ‘the experts in football’

This team have achieved some of the highest school attendance rates in the league whilst implementing community projects that of a consistently high standard. This can be attributed in no small part to the determined and committed leadership of the manager, John Koroma. Between him and the players, Central Professionals exemplify everything the CBF League stands for.

Little Skills – ‘small stature, massive heart’

Nicknamed ’The Happy Family’, Little Skills FC was formed in 2000 with the intention of putting a “beautiful smile” back on the faces of boys who had been caught in the turmoil of the civil war. Twelve years on and they are still going strong, still helping young boys develop and still putting smiles on the faces of everyone involved in the club.

Shiny Stars – ‘a shining example’

Shiny Stars are one of best teams in the league for implementing well planned and effective community development projects. The management are in continual contact with members of the local community to identify issues that the team can help with; in the past this has included rehabilitation of the local water supply and delivering messages on health issues such as malaria.

Welding United – ‘the unbreakable spirit’

Led by the ever smiling Edna Sowa, Welding United play football with an enjoyment and spirit that few elsewhere in the league can match. They are a pleasure to work with and their positive attitude has led to a number of fair-play awards in the past few seasons. Such is her love of the CBF League; Edna recently named her new born son Bellamy!

Young Stars – ‘stars of the future’

Young Stars really are working towards the future as they strive to improve the standards of all their boys, not just on the pitch but in the classroom too. Last year the u14 team were crowned regional champions and only narrowly missed out on a place in the national final after they were knocked out at the quarter-final stage. They also boast a u12 player who achieved the highest result in the region at the National Primary Schools Examinations, a shinning example for all the boys in our league.

Me and My Boys – ‘Determination in the face of adversity’

Me and My Boys were set up by a soldier who wished to give something back to the boys in his local community. Sadly the local authorities strongly disagreed with his actions believing that such activities were counter-productive to the community. The soldier was thrown in prison for three days and badly beaten; upon his release he continued to fight for his team and eventually won the support of many in the community. To this day, Me and My Boys represent the determination and courage of their head coach who fought for their survival.

Sektars – ‘From rivals to friends’

Sektars FC are a product of two young men from two rival communities, whose friendship surpassed the differences between the two areas. Their dream was always to set up a football club that would unite the two communities and help people move past their differences. Sadly one of the young men would lose his life in the civil war but in tribute his friend became ever more determined to fulfil their shared dream. In 2005, this was achieved with the formation of Sektars FC.

Real Stars – ‘the real deal’

The management team at Real Stars live by the motto that “it’s better to build up boys than to repair men”. The team was originally started by community stakeholders and NGOs working to rehabilitate returning child soldiers who found that football was an effective means to help heal the horrific psychological wounds inflicted on these young children. To this day, everyone linked to the club strongly believes in the healing power of sport and the importance of football in the development of Sierra Leone.
